Ordinary Time
June 10, 2021
Dear Friends,
Way back in 1969, when Rome reorganized the liturgical calendar, I was very enthusiastic about the changes. For the most part, I continue so to be. The one change that I regretted was that they changed the designation of the time from Pentecost until just before Advent as "Ordinary Time." That used to be called the "Season of Pentecost." This Sunday will be the "Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time." When I was growing up, it was called "Third Sunday after Pentecost." Trinity and Corpus Christi were first and second.
Just now, I looked up the reason they are now called "Sundays of Ordinary Time." Wikipedia tells me that "the word "ordinary" as used here comes from the ordinal numerals by which the weeks are identified or counted…" Remember from grade school that the cardinal numbers are for counting [1, 2, 3, 4,…]. The ordinal numbers tell the order of things [1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th,…].
Very often, when preparing my homilies, I look for the scriptures for the coming Sunday, and I see a heading like “Eleventh Sunday of Ordinary Time,” I sometimes remind myself that it's OK to think of this as the “Season of Pentecost.” That's because this time is as good as any - any day throughout the year - is a good day to expect the Holy Spirit to come to you and to me!

Let us continue to pray for each other.
Christ's peace,
